Coor Service Management not using nanotechnology in cleaning

As part of a joint drive with a number of leading service providers in Sweden, Coor has decided against using nanotechnology in cleaning for the time being. The reason is that the health effects of using nano technology have not been fully investigated.

Nano material is material based on very small (nano) particles, whose extremely small size enables new characteristics and functions to be achieved. Nanotechnology is about creating and utilizing these very small structures. New methods and applications of nanotechnology have exploded in recent years, in segments including cleaning. Advocates claim the method produces better results, through more durable and dirt-repellent surfaces, for a lower cost. Despite there being many benefits, the risks of nanotechnology have not been fully investigated. The Swedish Chemicals Agency reports that there are no reliable test methods for the impact of nanomaterials on the environment and health.

Accordingly, Coor has decided not to use nanotechnology for the present, out of consideration for its employees, its customers' employees and other people that may come into contact with surfaces where nanotechnology may be used. This decision was taken in consultation with a number of other major service providers in Sweden, who have also adopted the same policy.

"Our objective is to offer our customers solutions at the leading edge of progress, but we also have a responsibility for the impact our operation has on our employees, customers and other observers in a wider perspective. So until the risks and health effects are fully investigated, we won't be using nanotechnology in cleaning," commented Ulf Wretskog, President of Coor in Sweden.
